You should fulfill special forms and submit them at the local branch of the Social Security Office (Segurança Social).

Are there any social benefits I can claim such as child support?
Family Allowance for Children and Young People: eligible for all families that have children under 18 and also families that have children under 24 if they are studying.

Are there any social benefits for pregnant and nursing women?
Prenatal Family Allowance: The prenatal family allowance is an instalment in cash, assigned to the pregnant woman from the 13th pregnancy week, which aims to promote motherhood through the compensation of the charges accrued during the pregnancy.
This instalment is assigned for 6 months, from the month following the 13th pregnancy week or until the time of the birth.

Are there specific social supports available to me if I am elderly?
The Portuguese government has established several programs specifically designed to care for the elderly. The Programa de Apoio Integrado a Idosos (Program of Integrated Support to the Elderly) focuses on allowing the elderly to stay in their homes as long as possible and providing support for family caretakers.
Are there specific social supports available to me if I have a disability?
Portuguese Social Security makes disability pension payments to people who cannot work due to a disability, or who need care and supervision. The disability, either physical or mental, must be of a permanent nature and prevent the person from working.
People with disabilities, permanent and temporary, may be entitled to technical aids (ajudas técnicas) including prostheses, wheelchairs, optical aids. There are special arrangements for sufferers from hereditary paramyloidosis, HIV (AIDS), cancer, and multiple sclerosis. A local Social Security office can supply further details.
The claim form must be submitted at the Social Security office of the insured person's place of residence. Evidence may be required to substantiate the claim.
