Where can I go to find emergency/short-term housing?

At the following locations you can get a referral to a center with capacity:

  • At the border
  • Utrecht, Jaarbeurs, Hal 7 - Amsterdam, RAI Convention Centre
  • Maastricht, MECC Evenementencentrum
  • Eindhoven, Microlab Strijp-S

Those who do not have a place to sleep with friends or relatives are provided with shelter by the Dutch government. Currently, there are two distribution locations. There, refugees from Ukraine can go for temporary shelter, food and medical care, among other things. From there they are sent to smaller shelter locations in municipalities. Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that you will be placed at the location of you preference. For example, there often is no available accomodation in larger cities.

Can I access public housing or housing provided by the state? How and where do I apply for public housing?

Normally, you can access public housing/housing provided by the State only after you get a residence permit.

If you cannot stay with friends or family, the Dutch government provides shelter. You can find information on the website of the municipality you are staying in. When you receive a residence permit, you may move to a municipality. The government decides in which municipality you will live. This municipality will ensure that you get a house and will try to take your circumstances into account. Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that you will be placed at the location of you preference. For example, there often is no available accomodation in larger cities.

How do I find long term housing?

You can rent a property privately. Renting a home in the Netherlands requires identification documents and either proof of employment/income indicating you can cover the rent or proof of warranty by a third party and their income. Displaced people will also need to provide proof of legal stay. Or you can contact your municipality to help you find lon term housing. When you have found a house, you are obliged to register in the municipality where you are going to live. The municipality will update your details in the BRP.

If I am staying with friends and family in the long term, what documents do I need to fill out to make it official? How can I obtain proof of residency?

Please notify the municipality of your personal details and (temporary) address. Contact the municipality for more information on the applicable procedure and necessary documents.
