General information on border crossing?At this moment, Ukrainians with a biometric passport can travel freely to the Denmark and do not need a visa. There is also no need to apply for asylum. However, Ukrainians without a biometric passport must apply for a visa to enter the Denmark. In order to have a visa-free stay as an Ukrainian citizen you must have a biometric passport issued after 12 January 2015. If you have a passport issued before 12 January 2015 it is not biometric, and therefore you need to have a short-term visa to enter Denmark. If you do not have a biometric passport, you must have a short-term visa to enter Denmark. If you have not been issued a visa at the Danish mission before arriving at the Danish border, you can apply for a visa at the border (emergency visa). You must contact the police at the border. The Migration Service will process your application. If you are applying at the border, you must prove that you were not able to apply in advance. Therefore, you may be asked to document that the reason for your entry is unpredictable and necessary. You also have the opportunity to apply for a temporary residence permit in accordance with the Special Law. |
What documents do I need to enter?You can enter Denmark with any of the following documents:
If you donโt have a biometric passport, the immigration Office will advise you to apply for Laissez-passer (emergency passport) at one of the accommodation centres. The Laissez-passer is valid for 5 days and allows you and the Immigration Office time to contact the Ukrainian embassy in Denmark so they can issue a new passport. The Immigration Office will offer accommodation during the application process. For holders of old-style passports it is possible to enter with a visitor visa - it is issued at the border. Citizens without documents and with an internal passport are recommended to have an accompanying person living in Denmark when crossing the border (Germany-Denmark). The accompanying person may temporarily vouch for the arrival and inform that he plans to temporarily hold him. In order to prove family/marital status, birth certificates and a marriage certificate are required. The telephone number of the DPSU hotline ("Trust" Service) is 1598. You can use it for questions of a consultative nature within the competence of the State Border Service of Ukraine. To do so, citizens need to have a personal digital identifier called MitID. MitID is a digital certificate issued to all holders of an individual identification number (Det Centrale Personregister Number) in Denmark. What happens after a border crossing?Ukrainians who fled the war and ended up in Denmark will be able to immediately obtain a residence permit (temporary protection), which allows them to receive education, get a job and receive social benefits. The normative act provides that the residence permit will be issued for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension. |
How can I get from the border to the capital (a certain town)?Travellers with a permanent residence in Ukraine can travel into Denmark for free with DSBโs international trains that cross the Danish/German border. In connection with travelling into Denmark on the international trains, you can travel for free when showing a Ukrainian passport, driverโs licence or documents proving residence in Ukraine. The free trip applies to one trip on a Standard class ticket. From 1 July 2022, it is only possible to travel for free with DSB in the international trains that cross the Danish/German border and to travel with those trains to their final destination. All other trips with DSB will require a valid ticket. If Ukrainian refugees have a DB Help Ukraine Ticket, this ticket can also be used for a free trip to another destination with DSB as long as the ticket remains valid. Please note that these are voluntary schemes that the transport companies have initiated. Thus, it is also the transport companies that set the guidelines and scope in the future. How can I travel to another (specific) country?A Ukrainian refugee who applied for and is granted temporary protection in the Denmark is allowed to travel freely within the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days without a visa. You can travel by airplane, bus, car or train to different countries. |
How long can I stay?If you meet the requirements for being granted temporary proctection, you will be able to stay until March 17, 2024. With the possibility of a one-year extension only (in order to stay longer it would be necessary to apply for asylum, or for a residence permit on other grounds). A visa allows you to stay a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period in Denmark and is normally valid for the entire Schengen region. Can I stay more than 90 days in Denmark? In some cases, your visa or visa-free stay in Denmark may be extended by a visitation permit of up to 90 additional days, so that you can stay in Denmark for a maximum of 180 days altogether. The application for extension must be submitted before the expiry of your visa or visa-free stay. How long can I stay in Denmark without a visa? You may enter Denmark for up to 90 days for tourist purposes without a visa. As an Ukrainian citizen you can stay in Denmark for 90 days on a visa-free stay after your residence permit has expired. You can also apply for a residence permit under the Special Act on displaced persons from Ukraine, if you wish to remain in Denmark. |
Where can an unaccompanied minor get help?Unaccompanied minors will be placed in a municipality and taken care of by social services right away. You should tell the first authorities that you come into contact with (police, border guard) that you are unaccompanied and they will assist you. |

Where do I register for temporary protection?The registration Office will process your application. You can apply for temporary protection at e.g., the police or the citizen service. The Danish Immigration Service and the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration processes the residence applications. Application form for residence in Denmark is available online at New to Denmark website. To apply for residency, you must be in Denmark, fill out and submit form SL1. This can be done online or manually. If submitted online, your application will be automatically sent to the Danish Immigration Service. You must make an appointment with the Citizensโ Service to submit biometric information. For applications made on another personโs behalf (who may not be in Denmark), you must use form SL2. You can submit this application to a Danish diplomatic mission (embassy), where you will also have to have your biometrics recorded. |
How to extend the status of temporary protection?According to the law, the residence permit is valid for two years (until March 2024) with the possibility of extension. There is currently no need to renew the status of temporary protection. Source |
What are my rights while I wait to get temporary protection?Normally ัonsideration of an application for temporary protection is approximately 120 days. However, the immigration Office expects that it will be substantially faster than usual in the present situation. You have the right to stay in the country while your application is processed. However, if you within 4 weeks of the applications havenโt had your fingerprints and your profile picture taken you will forfeit this right. You will be informed about this. You will be offered accommodation from the immigration Office during the application process unless you choose to stay outside the accommodation-system. |
What documents will I receive once I get temporary protection?You will be granted a residence card when granted temporary protection. During the application process you will be granted an โasylum seeker cardโ or an โaccommodation cardโ. You will also be granted a CPR number that will allow you to access most social services. Ukrainians who fled the war and ended up in Denmark will be able to immediately obtain a residence permit, which allows them to receive education, get a job and receive social benefits. May I temporarily return to Ukraine? What will happen to my protection status?The Danish Return Agency is an authority under the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. If an applicant is given a final refusal of asylum, the case is transferred to the Danish Return Agency, which is responsible for ensuring that rejected asylum seekers leave Denmark and return to their home country. When an applicant is given a final refusal by the Refugee Appeals Board, the Danish Return Agency becomes responsible for accommodation and planning the departure from Denmark. The Danish Return Agency is also responsible for ensuring the departure of applicants rejected under the Dublin procedure or the rejection procedure. The Danish Return Agency handles the tasks relating to โโdeparture that are not associated with coercion or the use of force. It is the police deal with forced expulsions. |
Can I move around the country and the European Union freely while under temporary protection?In general, you are free to move around the country. However, you are covered by the rules of residence-placement, which means you may be given a place to live anywhere in Denmark. However, the Immigration Office does consider circumstances such as family and employment. When you are granted temporary protection in Denmark you can travel visa-free to other Schengen countries three months after. This means that you cannot travel to EU-countries who are not a part of Schengen freely (e.g., Ireland). |
Can I apply for asylum while under temporary protection? What is the difference?Yes, but we do not recommend that you do so. Asylum does not grant better rights and is a more difficult process. Moreover, you cannot return to your country of origin if you hold refugee status. It is only possible to apply for asylum in Denmark if you are in Denmark. You can also apply for asylum in Denmark at the border, for example if you do not meet the requirements for a visa free stay in Denmark. It is not possible to apply for asylum by enquiring at a Danish representation (embassy or consulate-general). If you apply for asylum and you do not already have another residence permit in Denmark, you must live at an asylum center. It is a requirement that you have stayed in Denmark for at least 6 months from when you applied for asylum in order to be allowed to move to a private accommodation. How and where can I apply for the residency?If you want to work, seek family reunification, or stay in Denmark longer than 90 days (e.g. for study purposes), you should apply for a residence permit. You apply for a residence permit through either the Danish Immigration Service or the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI). You simply must ask either the Police, the Immigration Office or the Citizen service for asylum. The Immigration Office will process your case.Due to its EU opt-out on legal issues, Denmark is not bound by the recently activated EU Temporary Protection Directive. Instead, the Danish government has introduced a special law that strongly resembles the directive and will enter into force on 18 March 2022. The application for a temporary residence permit in Denmark is submitted using the online form "SL1" at the following link When completing the application, you will need your passport or other identity document, as well as birth certificates or other identity documents of your children. Before you start filling out the application, your username (a set of numbers) and a temporary password will be created, which you will need to change in the next step (8 characters from letters and numbers). How long I need to wait to get the residency?The period of consideration of the application for a temporary residence permit in Denmark lasts from 2 to 4 weeks. If you have been granted temporary protection, you will be able to stay until March 17, 2024. With the possibility of a one-year extension only (in order to stay longer it would be necessary to apply for asylum, or for a residence permit on other grounds). Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are usually valid for a period of 10 years, but if you have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain at some point within the past few years, then you may have been given a biometric residence permit that expires on 31st December 2024. |

How to issue a foreign passport while abroad?In order to issue a foreign passport, you need to contact the Ukrainian Embassy A foreign passport is issued to a person who has reached the age of 16 on the basis of an application-questionnaire submitted by him personally. At the same time, the issuance of a foreign passport to a person who has been recognized by the court as having limited legal capacity or incapacity is carried out on the basis of an application-questionnaire of the guardian or other legal representative. In case of loss or theft of the previous passport, a document (report, certificate, etc.) issued by the competent authority of the state in which the passport was lost or stolen is attached to the application, confirming the fact of the owner's application regarding its loss or theft. Such a document is submitted without legalization and translation into Ukrainian. In the case of issuing a passport in connection with a change in personal data (surname and/or first name), a document confirming such a change (marriage certificate, divorce certificate, court decision, etc.) is attached to the application. When issuing a foreign passport with a new surname and/or first name, the "domestic" passport (ID card) must be reissued. In the event that the applicant has not previously been issued with an identity document, confirming Ukrainian citizenship and/or granting the right to leave Ukraine and enter Ukraine, a certificate of registration of the person as a citizen of Ukraine is provided (with the exception of cases when the person's parents at the time of his were citizens of Ukraine at birth). |
How can a Ukrainian refugee register a newborn in this country?You can register the birth of a child only at the consulate. There, the determination of his origin and the assignment of his surname, first name, and patronymic are carried out. The application for registration must be submitted immediately, but no later than one month after the birth of the child, and in the case of a stillborn child - no later than three days. The registration process takes place at the place of birth or at the place of residence of the child's parents or one of them (with a written application). At the same time, in case of illness, death of the parents or for other reasons it is impossible to register the birth - the application can be submitted by relatives or other persons authorized by the representative of the health care institution in which the child was born or is currently. Is the status of a citizen of Ukraine preserved during the birth of a child in the Denmark? A newborn Ukrainian in the Denmark retains the status of a citizen of Ukraine. Data on citizenship and nationality in the act record of birth and certificate are not filled in, which is why a corresponding entry is made in the column "For marks". In addition, a person whose parents or one of his parents were citizens of Ukraine at the time of his birth is a citizen of Ukraine. The place of birth of the baby does not affect the possibility of him acquiring Ukrainian citizenship. |
Where to apply in case of death of a Ukrainian abroad? How to repatriate the deceased to their homeland?There are several steps involved in the process of body repatriation from abroad to Ukraine: 1. Notify the authorities. The first step of body repatriation from abroad to Ukraine is to contact the local authorities in Denmark, so you can register the death. Ukrainian embassy 2. All the mentioned documents should be authenticated, legalized and translated into Ukrainian by the certified translator. The originals of abovementioned documents and notarized translations, must accompany the casket containing the deceased, or urn with ashes, to Ukraine. The passport of the deceased person should be sent to the Embassy of Ukraine along with a notarized and authenticated copy of the Certificate of Death, and a translation from Danish to Ukrainian. The Embassy is to make correspondent procedures with the passport and can forward it back if it is required to accompany the casket containing the deceased, or urn with ashes, to Ukraine. The Embassy is to be informed of the date, time, and the place of delivery of the casket containing the deceased, or urn with ashes, to Ukraine. Only the next of kin relatives of the deceased, or persons correspondingly authorized by them, can receive the casket or urn. 3. Transport the deceased to Ukraine. The casket containing the body, or urn with ashes, must be sealed by the Funeral Home. There are no strict requirements with respect to the urn with ashes; however, the body should be transported in a metal casket, made of zinc-plated steel or tinplate not more than 0,4 thick. For the air cargo transportation, it is necessary to specify a cemetery in Ukraine as well as Ukrainian Funeral Home which will take care of the casket, or the urn with ashes, in Ukraine.
