What other forms of social support/welfare should I know about? (Buddy systems, etc.) Who is eligible? How does someone apply?

There are different social benefits available in Denmark depending on your situation. You can ask the municipality (The citizen service) if you qualify for other social benefits.

You can get housing benefits if you are renting an apartment or house. The amount depends on your situation (primarily your income, the number of children in the household and parameters) and the apartment. You can apply here mceclip0.png.

To be eligible for unemployment benefits you must have a permanent address. You must also be looking for a job. You can apply for benefits at the citizen service here mceclip0.png.

When you are granted unemployment benefits you will weekly be called in for conversation/interviews with a job adviser at the โ€œJobcenterโ€ in order to get you employed.

Parents may be entitled to for a financial daycare subsidy (fripladstilskud), which may reduce or entirely cover the parental contribution, provided the parents meet the conditions in the Day Care Act with regards to this.

Maternity/paternity benefits compensate for income you do not get when you are on maternity leave

Maternity benefits are benefits that you have the possibility of getting as compensation for the income which you do not get when you are on maternity leave. Your possibility of obtaining maternity benefits depends on your affiliation with the labour market, meaning if you are:

  • a salaried employee on maternity leave
  • an unemployed person on maternity leave
  • self-employed on maternity leave or
  • students and newly qualified on maternity leave.

Maternity benefits are administered by Udbetaling Danmark (Public Benefits Administration).
